Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem

Shalom from Jerusalem!

A person who reaps one hundred measures and prays "God, make them two hundred" - this is a futile prayer. However, one may pray "God, please bless this harvest with a blessing and not a curse."

Tosefta Brachot 6

Are the Sages just nitpicking about a semantic difference?

It would seem that this maxim is speaking of two different types of people. As the Sages say elsewhere, "He who has one measure wants two," and "A man does not die with even half of his desires fulfilled." Such a person's attitudes and values are much too focused on the physical. It is questionable whether he would pray at all, and if he would, what kind of prayer would that be - more like a quarter in a vending machine.

On the other hand, someone who realizes that God is the source of all blessing, Who really decides whether any endeavor will succeed or fail - that is the person whose prayer is sincere, and who will more likely be answered favorably.

Today, release yourself of thoughts of "my might and the strength of my hand have created this wealth (Deut 8:17)," and deposit your fate into the hands of the world's true Director.
