Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem

Shalom from Jerusalem!

When a person prays in his [own] house, it is as if an iron wall surrounds him.?

Jerusalem Talmud, Berachot 5, 1

A man's home is his castle, goes the old adage. What could be better than elevating your home to a Divine castle? Especially as we have learned that a person should designate a space for prayer. However, the Sages seem to be casting a negative light on prayer in the privacy of your own home. What is the meaning of this dichotomy?

Iron walls can serve three purposes: to jail someone; to protect someone from harm, or to shield someone from things that should be dealt with.

If a person makes sure to pray with his or her community, then they are part of that community, for better or for worse. Ultimately, no problem that exists within the community, or in the world for that matter, will escape scrutiny, and as necessary, action.

But if someone stays within their own four walls, they will not be cognizant of the ills of the world. And involvement in the world is what God wants from each and every one of us. If we shield our eyes from His world, He will avert His eyes from ours.

Today, open your home to someone in need, and God will shine His grace on you and your needs.
