Prayer Without Intent Is Better Than Not Praying At All
Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem
Shalom from Jerusalem!
Whoever makes his prayers set, causes his prayers to cease being supplications.
Brachot 28
Our sages state what some might consider obvious: if your prayers are rote, then any intent they have disappears. However, there is a difference between supplications, which they cease to be, and prayers, which they seem to continue to be! What is the difference?
Our sages seem to be telling us that even if we are unable to garner heartfelt intentions for our prayers, they still have a value, if only to keep the faith. As King Solomon said in his wisdom, "if you leave me for one day, I will leave you for two." It is better to do some things less than optimally than to go without doing them at all - and prayer is one of them.
Today, even if you "don't feel like it" - pray.
