Pray With Intent, And Your Prayer Will Carry You
Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem
Shalom from Jerusalem!
What is set prayer? If a person considers his prayer a weight. Others say: any prayer in which the person praying is unable to innovate anything new.
Brachot 29
In this maxim, our sages define an intentless, rote prayer. As we have learned, a rote, set prayer is better than no prayer at all. But here we learn that there is a spectrum of rote prayers.
Some people can go for days, even years, praying the same words, and for them, this is fine, as they do not consider it a weight. Others may become exasperated if they are unable to compose something new each and every time they face the Creator. To each his own: if you feel that your prayer needs a "tune-up," whatever that may mean to you, do not hesitate. But always realize that God is listening to our prayers.
Today, try to incorporate something new in your prayer.
