Pray To The Heights From The Depths:

Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem
Shalom from Jerusalem!
A person should not stand in a high place and pray, but rather in a low place. A person should not stand on a chair or a foot stool and pray.

Brachot 10

God is infinitely above us, no matter where we stand. It is quite basic for even beginners in a relationship with Him to grasp this. So why is the choice of a spot to pray in so important?

Prayer and humility are closely related. If we think too much of ourselves, then God waits patiently until there is room for Him to come in.

As it is written in Psalms 130: From the depths I called out to you, O Lord.

To clarify matters, our sages state that even a foot stool is considered high when considering places suitable for prayer, humility-wise. And this must teach us that even the least bit of haughtiness is too much to be acceptable with God.

Today, think of someone else who you had thought was below you, recognize that in some ways at least that person is greater than you, and then pray.
