Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem

Shalom from Jerusalem!

If you directed your heart in prayer, you will be told that your prayer was accepted.

Jerusalem Talmud, Berachot 5, 4

Once again, the Sages emphasize the importance of "kavana," intent, during prayer. But what is the significance of the phrase "directed your heart?" and why "you will be told" about your prayer's acceptance, instead of simply "your prayers will be accepted?"

The Sages are hinting at an often hidden but always important aspect of prayer: our relationships with other people. It is a matter of course that a person's heart will be directed towards God during prayer, and hopefully before and after it as well.

But God wants His children to relate to one another. Especially when occupied with prayer, make sure that you are thinking of others. Direct your heart, purposely, to others. By noticing the needs of others, your requests of God will be more focused. Furthermore, you will realize that your "paper bag" of worries and troubles is lighter than those of others, and praise God for this as well.

By opening your eyes, ears, and heart to others, God will shine His grace on you, and answer your prayers. And He will further bless you, by enabling someone else to be the bearer of this news, possibly without his or her knowledge. "The Creator has many envoys." For example, overhearing someone saying "here comes the bus" could be an answer to your prayer that you didn't miss it.

Today, be sensitive to God's answers to your prayers that are delivered through His varied messengers.
