Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem

Shalom from Jerusalem!

Is it proper to pray all day long? Daniel said (6, 11), "and he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed."

May a person pray facing any direction he chooses? Daniel said (6, 11), "[he prayed] towards Jerusalem."

May a person raise their voice when praying? It is written about Hannah (1 Samuel 1, 13): "Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice could not be heard."

May a person ask for their needs before praying? King Solomon said (1 Kings 8, 28): ...listen to the cry and to the prayer which Your servant prays today." "Cry" means prayer, and "Prayer" means personal request.

Brachot 31

The Sages learned from the behavior of the great biblical personalities Daniel, Hannah, and Solomon how we should go about praying. And in fact, the rulings regarding these four aspects - frequency, direction, volume, priorities - are part of the traditional Jewish code.

Of course, prayers offered in ways differing from these standards are perfectly acceptable alternatives. But as in any endeavor, it is usually a good idea to take an example from the experts.

Today, focus on one of these recommendations, and consider what effect it has on your prayer.
