Hear Your Own Prayer, and God Will Too
Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem
Shalom from Jerusalem!
"Only her lips moved (1 Samuel 1, 13)" From here we learn that whoever prays must move (lit.: cut with) their lips.
Brachot 31
Jewish sages infer this and many other rules about prayer from Hannah. Even formalistic prayer is based on the from-the-heart lamentations of this woman whose request for a child continued to be her first priority. How should one feel when making a request from God? Should we be soft and pliant, like the hardly discernable movement of lips? Or should we be sharp and strong, like the decisive cutting of a knife?
Like so many things, the answer lies in between - or is a combination of both. This example of hardness and softness, lips that move and cut at the same time, give us a window to the thoughts of heartfelt prayers - and how knowledgeable the sages were about human nature.
Today, change your perspective on a prayer, and be bold in your petitions.
