Happiness is Serious Business
Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem
Shalom from Jerusalem!
Do not approach prayer with feelings of sadness, or laziness, or lack of seriousness, or in the middle of a conversation with a friend, or lightheartedness, or if you were just wasting your time. Rather, approach prayer from the happiness that comes with doing God's will.
Brachot 31
Are the Sages judging our behavior?
No, at least not in this passage. There is a time and a place for everything, but prayer is a time for seriousness. Wait a second, make that Happiness! Do not mistake one for the absence of the other. Doing God's will by definition leads to a sublime happiness that puts you in the perfect frame of mind to approach Him. In fact, that happiness (not to be confused with frivolity) in turn leads to a yearning for God!
Today, smile before praying, confident that God will smile upon you.
