Clear Your Thoughts and Empty Your Hands
Thoughts and Prayers from Jerusalem
Shalom from Jerusalem!
A person should not pray with an item like a coin in their hand.
Tosefta Brachot 2
Some people find that holding on to something actually helps them to concentrate. Why would the Sages issue a sweeping prohibition against such a custom?
We know that "kavana" - intent - is imperative during prayer. Focusing on our relationship with God helps us to succeed in it, and models (as it were) the focus that we would like God to have when dealing with us and our needs.
It is important to differentiate between items of different natures. While some things might help you to concentrate, others, "like a coin," can sidetrack you completely.
It doesn't take much to understand that a coin is a metaphor for our worldly pursuits. If you deal with your finances while praying, when will you deal with your spirit?
Today, set aside all your other businesses, and concentrate on your prayer.
